Welcome
Founded in 1897, the MCOBA has a long and distinguished history, and in the more than 100 years of its existence it has played a prominent role in not only fostering an esprit de corps amongst Old Collegians (OCs), but also in assisting and guiding the school's successive Headmasters and Governing Bodies in the making of certain key decisions and the formulating of key policies that affect our beloved alma mater.
Although many former schoolboys - and probably quite a few OCs too - have mixed feelings at best when they think back to their schooldays, Maritzburg College is fortunately rather unique in the loyalty and sometimes out-and-out devotion that it manages to engender in many of the scholars who pass through its venerable buildings.
Not for nothing did Old Collegians in the trenches during the First World War go "over the top" to their deaths, roaring "COOOOLLEGE!"; not for nothing do former College boys continue to return in their droves every year to retrace the more carefree steps of their youth.
Like the Old Collegian who recently heard that his brother had been killed in London and immediately drove more that 100 km to the place where he could sit quietly, think of happier times, and try and come to terms with his grief: beneath the jacarandas on Basher Ridge, Goldstones.
For such men, College is not a school. It's a way of life.
If you are an Old Collegian, please rest assured in the knowledge that your Association is today a flourishing organisation, which now operates from splendid new premises overlooking the Forder Oval atop Barns field. If you are not a paid-up member, I must also urge you to contact the Secretary, Mrs Linda Laubscher, on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it right away, so that she can get you on the MCOBA's books and keep you abreast with news of the school, of the Association and of the numerous OCs who are in contact with us each year.
There are many challenges facing Maritzburg College today, and as the state provides fewer and fewer resources to the school, so the burden of supplying them, or making provision for them, becomes greater on the Old Collegian community. It is imperative, therefore, that the MCOBA remains strong, both financially and in terms of membership and participation. Only by doing so is the Association able to render the type of assistance to the school that is required.
This is only possible if we have many members who pay their subscriptions. Simply coming to the school now and again to support the occasional function or sports match is no longer good enough. The MCOBA needs you to join and to pay your subscription! Only then can we continue to be of service and value to our great school.
Happy browsing.
